Biodiversity and Environmental Sustainability Trust (BEST) is a non-governmental organization (NGO) dedicated to research with the aim to sustainably conserve the biodiversity, the natural and critical habitats, and ecosystem services. This organization has started with the first intake (2011-2012) of the students who studied a master’s program in Biodiversity Conservation at the National University of Rwanda. It started operating officially in 2014. The activities of BEST are mainly focused on Rwanda and its office is located in Huye district. The activity scope is large provided there is a contribution to biodiversity conservation and environmental sustainability: it encompasses biodiversity (wildlife in general), ecosystem services, and natural resources among other aspects. This organization has built a collaborative network with Protestant Institute of Arts and Social Sciences (PIASS) through the department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management, faculty of Development Studies. Among the other activities done so far there is a 10-month project on bamboo and local communities in the South-Western part of Nyungwe National Park (ref: https://www.rufford.org/projects/methode_majyambere). In its efforts to be a well operational, vibrant, and ideal organization, BEST would like to recruit two staff, a Program manager and a Financial manager.
Position 1: Program manager
Duties and responsibilities
– Prepare the action plan and participate directly in program management
– Follow up and monitor implementation of activities according to the action plan(s)
– Propose and lead management meetings and coordinate the staff
– Liaise the organization with collaborating district(s) and the Joint Action Forum
– Report to the Board of Directors at least monthly the progress of activities and projects
– Coordinate field activities for projects under implementation
– Contribute in grant proposal writing and monitor similar tasks within the organization
– Contribute to training of students in partnering higher-learning institutions
– Conduct and create initiatives for environmental education in communities
Requirements
– Having a Master’s degree in fields of Environment, Natural Resources, Wildlife Management, or Biodiversity conservation. Alternatively, having a BSc degree with agreement of the candidate to go for Master’s training in the period not beyond one year after starting the job, the commitment that would be expressed in writing
– Efficient use of English both oral and in writing; the use of French would be an advantage
– Consistency of research work conducted or project service record (at least one)
– Basic knowledge of organizational structure and operation (in general and about BEST)
– Commitment to working responsibly to strengthen operationally the organization
– Commitment for leave leadership responsibilities or conflicting services for another affiliated organization or enterprise with similar attributions
– Availability to work sometimes in weekends, which will be compensated with a leave during working days of equal hours expended
Position 2: Financial manager
Duties and responsibilities
– Prepare salaries and other payments and manage the financial system thereof
– Managing the NGO’s accounts, including financial monitoring and auditing activities
– Manage the grant funds and field funds for projects under implementation
– Contribute in formulating strategic and long-term organizational plans
– Advise senior managers and top executives in budget planning, both in regular operations and in project designs and grant proposals
– Prepare reports as required by law, regulations or NGO’s policies
– Conduct field visits if required to monitor financial operations and address challenges
– Manage logistics and accounting for events such as workshops and seminars where the organization invests resources
Requirements
– Having a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Accounting, Management Accounting, Financial Management, Financial accounting, or any other finance-related field
– Efficient use of English both oral and in writing; the use of French would be an advantage
– Experience in A0 level work in accounting is not a strong requirement, but any previous job experience for at least 6 months in an institution or organization is an advantage
– Commitment to working responsibly to strengthen financially the organization
– Availability for full-time work, from Monday to Friday working hours (8:00-12:00 a.m. and 2:00-5:00 p.m.)
Additional general information
– The salary is negotiable between BEST and the candidate
– The job will be started with a 6-month contract as probation period, which can be followed with 1-year renewable contracts when the performance of the candidate(s) helps BEST to take positive decision in that regard
